Following the original intent of its founders, the Church Missionary Society in 1969, GEAT continues to fulfil its key objectives and comply with its charitable purpose:
• Deliver on the charitable expectations and needs of the 14 clans of the community
• Preserve the Trust into the future to generate enough income from royalties to support ongoing charitable programs
We will do this by:
• Maintaining strong foundations to ensure a sustainable future
• Building on internal capacity
• Strengthening our community
• Clear and transparent communication
Extensive and regular community consultation together with environmental scanning revealed the following charitable priorities to be focused on in the next 7 years (2023 – 2030):
GEAT’s status as a charitable trust, providing for the charitable purposes of the 14 clans of the Groote Archipelago, has been confirmed by the NT Supreme Court. Refer to the Judgement made by the Honourable Justice Hiley.
GEAT is tax exempt under its charity status. The royalty payment GEAT receives is not subject to mining withholding tax.
GEAT’s confirmed status as a charitable trust forms the basis of its purpose and all its operations. GEAT’s unique advantages result in major benefits that flow to the 14 clans.
GEAT is also a registered charity with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profit Commission.
